The Vukovar Water Tower is a landmark and memorial. It has been converted into a war museum and is a popular tourist attraction. Built between 1963 and 1968, the 50.33-meter-tall tower is a symbol of the city's resistance and suffering during the Croatian War. Today, it attracts many visitors. On the way to the small, secluded village of Jamena, one passes a memorial plaque for war casualties of World War II. The road briefly crosses the Croatian border here. This monument dates back to a time before the EU's external border. During World War II, Croatia was characterized by the Ustasa movement, which was allied with the Nazis and known for its brutal actions. At the same time, there was a strong partisan movement in Yugoslavia, which was among the largest and most effective resistance movements in Europe. This otherwise well-maintained road ends at the border. From the Serbian side, the stretch of the path to the nearest Croatian village looks inviting, almost like an offer of peace. An old cemetery lies almost next to the border in the tri-border area of Serbia-Bosnia-Croatia. Those buried here likely represent various ethnicities, but the burial site is almost only accessible through Serbia, and even then with difficulty. Mr. W. shot a baboon during a hunting trip in South Africa. He mentions that he shot the animal in 'Breitenbach': This is the former name from the apartheid era for the region around Breyten and is still used by German big-game hunters for reasons of colonial nostalgia. As if it were still like colonial times today.<br />

Aside from the neck and head of a giraffe emerging from the floor, Mr. W. also proudly showcases multiple endangered species. One day, he hopes to hunt a polar bear — “before they go extinct,” he says.<br />

The Jägereiverband Augsburg e.V. is one of the older hunting associations in Germany. Its chairman, Hans Fürst, has known hunting since he was a child and is committed to the preservation of nature. In addition to his involvement with the Bund Naturschutz, he trains hunters. In the theory lessons for the hunting license, his students learn the anatomy of native animals using true-to-nature specimens. These are lined up in a specially designed room in the clubhouse.<br />

An manchen der Stahlpfeiler hängen, überdacht durch Solar-Module, weiße Metallkästen. In dem Fall handelt es sich um einen Wechselrichter. Bei starker Sonneneinstrahlung legt sich das Geräusch der Lüfter dieser Geräte wie ein Summen über den ganzen Hopfengarten: Hopfenbauer Josef Wimmer nennt das als sein Lieblingsgeräusch, denn das bedeutet, dass die Anlage in dem Moment sehr viel Strom erzeugt.

Diejenigen Hopfenreben, die am darauffolgenden Tag zu Forschungszwecken geerntet werden sollen, werden markiert. Es werden Pflanzen unter Solarpanels mit denen ohne Beschattung verglichen. Einen Unterschied im Wuchs können auch Laien unter Anleitung erkennen.

In etwa sieben Meter Höhe sind die Solarpanele auf einer Spezialkonstruktion angebracht und leicht in Richtung Süden angewinkelt. Durch die Abstand zwischen den Reihen werfen sie keine Schatten aufeinander, was vor allem im Winter einen Vorteil gegenüber eines konventionellen Solarparks darstellt.

An einem anderen Hang, etwas nördlich der Agri-PV-Versuchsanlage steht bereits der größte Teil eines weiteren solchen Hopfengarten: Mit stärker angewinkelten Solar-Modulen will man ganzjährig mehr Energie erzeugen. Dank eines größeren Abstands lassen sich steilere Winkel umsetzen.

Der trockene Hopfen fällt durch große Klappen nach der Trocknung ein Stockwerk tiefer. Hier in der Darre ist die Luftfeuchtigkeit hoch und die Hitze der Trocknungsanlage macht die Arbeit noch schwerer. Die Trocknung überwacht der Hopfenbauer zusammen mit seinem Vater, der nicht nur seine jahrzehntelange Erfahrung mit einbringt, sondern auch mit anpackt.

Während der Hopfenernte ist Hopfenbauer Wimmer mit einer Hand voll Gastarbeiter*innen und seiner Familie in ihrem Betrieb eingespannt. Die Arbeit ist trotz des Einsatzes von Spezialmaschinen kräftezehrend. Damit sich die Arbeit noch mehr für sie lohnt, will er bald noch mehr seines Hopfenbestands mit Photovoltaik ausstatten.

Die Mitarbeiter des Hopfenforschungszentrum Hüll ernten den Hopfen mit einem Traktor und speziellen Erntemaschinen. Für Forschungszwecke werden immer nur zwanzig Reben auf einmal geerntet. Entgeht der Maschine einmal eine Hopfenrebe, so wird sie kurzerhand von Hand heruntergerissen und auf den Anhänger gelegt.

Anton Lutz ist Hopfenzüchter am Hopfenforschungszentrum Hüll und ist skeptisch, ob sich die Beschattung durch die Solarpanele positiv auf den Hopfenertrag auswirkt. “Der Hopfen soll kein Alibi für eine einfachere Genehmigung für eine Solaranlage sein.”, sagt er.

Zupft man alle Blättchen von einer Hopfendolde ab, soll nur der Strunk in der Mitte zurückbleiben und noch elastisch sein: Dann ist die Trocknung ideal. Eine gewisse Restfeuchtigkeit soll bleiben.

Nachdem eine Hopfenzeile abgeerntet wurde reisst ein Erntehelfer die letzten Reste vom Hopfengarten. Wenn die Anlage nun “leer” steht, kommt ein weiterer Vorteil zum tragen: Die Agri-PV-Anlage erzeugt schließlich auch dann Strom, wenn der Hopfen weg ist.

Die Konstruktion der Photovoltaik ist so gestaltet, dass sie nicht mit den Arbeiten im Hopfen-Anbau interferiert. Während der Ernte können die Maschinen wie gewohnt durch die Hopfenzeilen fahren. Am Boden werden die Pflanzen, mitsamt ihrer Rankhilfe, durchgeschnitten und durch die Fahrtbewegung des Traktors von dem Drahtgeflecht abgerissen. Die Hopfenrebe landet auf dem Anhänger.
